Anne Carter

Anne Carter was born and raised in Don Mills, Ontario. As a teenager, she traveled widely, living and working in Israel, France and California. After earning her education degree, she taught in Northern Quebec and Montreal before settling in Toronto.

Inspired by influences as diverse as Nancy Drew and J.R.R. Tolkien, Anne has always had a special interest in how children view the world and their need for heroes. Tall in the Saddle, her first picturebook, explores a child's relationship with his father.

The 1999 winner of the Vicky Metcalfe Award, Anne is a full-time writer, although in the past she has worked as a French immersion and ESL teacher. Anne now lives in Toronto with her husband and four children, who often wonder what Dad really does all day.

Tall in the Saddle
Anne Carter
Illustrations by David McPhail
Where does Dad really go every day when he leaves the house in a jacket and tie? The young boy in this story imagines that he is tall in the saddle, "still wearing his boots." Mrs. Fusspot's bicycle becomes a wild horse, a bronco, that "only my dad and I can tame." At the end of the day, he "swings me high on his shoulders. I ride home, tall in the saddle." This is an old-fashioned cowboy story, complete with rotten rustlers and lassos to rope stray calves. Neither the text nor the illustrations is especially dramatic or memorable, but Tall in the Saddle could spark a classroom discussion about the work parents really do when they leave home each day - and what children might like to do with a particular parent. 1999, Orca Book Publishers, Ages 3 to 7, $14.95.
