Becky Citra
Becky Citra lives on a ranch in Bridge Lake, BC, with eight horses, a cat called Cookie, and Robin, a Springer spaniel. Often visited on the farm by bears, moose and coyotes, Becky spends her time, while not working as a primary teacher, cross country skiing, horseback riding and reading.
Born in Vancouver and having lived all over the province, often in remote areas, has given Becky invaluable insight into the life of a homesteading family. An excerpt from Catherine Parr Traill's classic A Canadian Settler's Guide, planted the seed of the idea for Ellie's New Home, Becky's first book for Orca Book Publishers. This new entry in the Orca Young Reader Series is the story of a girl and her brother left on an isolated homestead while their father looks for land.
Becky's past books include: My Homework is in the Mail and School Campout, both from Scholastic.

Ellie's New Home
Becky Citra
Traveling from England to Canada in 1835 was not easy, but Ellie's father had insisted on bringing Ellie and her brother with him, in spite of their grandmother's protests. When Ellie and five-year-old Max were left with a farm family while Father went on to find a place for them to settle, Ellie was miserable. She knew nothing of farm life and rejected the friendly gestures of Mary and her mother, preferring to hold on to her English gentility. It takes a life-threatening emergency and a joint run through a storm-drenched forest for Ellie and Mary to become the friends they had both wanted to be. The easy reader format makes this book accessible for beginning readers. 1999, Orca Book Publishers, Ages 6 to 10, $5.95. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer
