Judith Ortiz Cofer
Judith Ortiz Cofer is the author of a novel The Line of the Sun, of Silent Dancing, a collection of essays and poetry, of two books of poetry, Terms of Survival and Reaching for the Mailand, and of The Latin Deli: Prose and Poetry. Her work has appeared in Glamour, The Georgia Review, Kenyon Revies, and other journals. She has been authologized in The Best American Essays, The Norton Book of Women's Lives. The Pushcart Prize, and the O. Henry Prize Stories. A PEN/ Martha Albrand Special Citation in non-fiction was awarded to her for Silent Dancing. The Anisfield Wolf Book Award for The Latin Deli, and her work has been selected for the Syndicated Fiction Project. She has received fellowships from the NEA and the Witter Bynner Foundation for poetry. Her most recent book is a collection of short stories, An Island Like You: Stories of the Barrio, (Orchard Books 1995, Penguin U.S.A., 1996) which was named a Best Book of the Year, 1995-96 by the American Library Association. It was awarded the first Pura Belpre medal by REFORMA of ALA in 1996. La linea del sol, the Spanish translation of The Line of the Sun, was published in 1997 by the University of Puerto Rico Press. Forthcoming: A collection of New and Selected Prose and Poetry, The Year of Our Revolution, from Arte Publico Press, 1998, also from the same press: the Spanish Translation of Silent Dancing, Bailando en silencio. HBO has optioned one of the stories in The Latin Deli for a feature length cable movie. She is the 1998 recipient of the Christ-Janer Award in Creative Research from the University of Georgia. A native of Puerto Rico, she now resides in Georgia and is a Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Georgia.Added 1999
