Katherine Holubitsky

Much of Katherine's inspiration for Alone at Ninety Foot comes from her experiences working as a library technician with children in grades ten to twelve at an Edmonton high school.

Born in Toronto, Katherine spent her early years in Ontario before moving to British Columbia and finally settling in Edmonton. Now married with two children, Katherine counts among her influences Margaret Laurence, John Lennon and Dr. Doolittle.

Alone at Ninety Foot
Katherine Holubitsky
Pam Collins' world is collapsing around her. Her baby sister dies from SIDS. Her depressed mother commits suicide. She is the victim of attempted rape. Her father is dating again. School is another obstacle in the way of her happiness. At fourteen, Pam endures more than any person should. Her only escape is a rock ledge in a canyon that she can sun on without disruption. With the help of good friends and a new love interest, she battles to find the light at the end of the tunnel and rediscover life. This novel is positively marvelous. Every facet of it relates to the teen world and the trials they go through. Written in a kind of journal form, Holubitsky envelops us in Pam's life. Put me on the list for Holubitsky's next book. I'm hooked. 1999, Orca Book Publishers, Ages 13 up, $5.95. Reviewer: Scott S. Floyd
