Loon Lake Fishing Derby
Kathleen Cook Waldron
Illustrated by Dean Griffiths
Ah, the peace of summer by the lake. But is it perhaps a bit too peaceful? Mr. Pike thinks it is. So he organizes the Loon Lake Fishing Derby and the town is suddenly crawling with fishermen and fishing boats and...worms. The only very interesting person in the story is Wally Dale, who sets up shop selling worms. The only problem is that all the other youngsters in town do the same thing and soon, every petunia bed and vegetable garden is desperately short of worms. Our enterprising Wally Dale immediately begins taking worms back, in return for a cool slice of watermelon. The worms are eventually snuggled back in their gardens, no one has caught any fish in the derby, and the lake is peaceful once again. The cover illustration is whimsical and fun; the story and the pictures have bits of silliness that young children will enjoy. Generally, however, the illustrations seem crowded without many interesting details and the story is a pleasant one-time read without the punch to become a long-time favorite. 1999, Orca Book Publishers, Ages 4 to 8, $14.95.
