CLCD NEWSVolume 1, Issue 7July 2002

The Fourth of July conjures up thoughts of picnics, fireworks and family gatherings. Sweet corn is on schedule if it is "knee-high by the 4th of July." It means it will be ready for harvest in just a few short weeks. How about you? Are you on schedule for those tasks you planned to tackle over the summer? Would you rather be reading a book under a shade tree than slaving over new book orders and replacement lists? The Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) can help you quickly and efficiently accomplish your goals. To subscribe, go to www.childrenslit.com

Sharing the Good News
Summer is a busy time for booksellers, whether they are helping customers with their beach reading or recommending books for children to keep their reading skills in top notch condition. Here's what some of them have to say about the CLCD:

"I think the CLCD is clean, crisp and extraordinarily easy to use. The company updates the system with new titles earlier than most of the databases we check, so it is usable for timely ordering. I heartily recommend it." Jewell Stoddard, Children's Specialist, Politics & Prose Bookstore, Washington DC

We have been enthusiastic users of the Children's Literature Database since its inception. We find that it is an invaluable tool whenever we have teacher theme requests or whenever a customer requires help locating titles for special needs." Marilyn Dugan, Owner, A Likely Story Children's Book Store, Alexandria VA

The Children's Literature database is one of the most important tools Barnes & Noble.com uses for merchandising children's and young adults' books. Our customers appreciate the concise, informed reviews we license from the Children's Literature database and consider them a valuable aid in their efforts to make informed buying decisions. In addition, we rely on the expert reviews provided by Children's Literature to assist us in cataloging and classifying books. Richard Stark, Director of Product Data, Barnes & Noble

"The CLCD database contains reviews and catalog records for books that are in print as well as out-of-print. That is a big help for a store that sells used and new books. We can identify the real "treasures" of children's literature quickly and easily. CLCD has a great search capability and the results presented are clear and accurate." Tom Simon, Owner, 7th Avenue Books, Brooklyn NY

Search Tip of the Month
Q: Sometimes when I do a search I get a message that says that no records were found, but I know that's not true. What could I be doing wrong?
A:
What's probably happening is that you did not start out with a cleared search screen. It's very easy to do a search, look at the results, and then use the back button to do another search. However, if you selected one specific genre or some other qualifier on the prior search, your new search may still include that qualifier. To avoid this type of problem, we recommend you make it a point to use the NEW SEARCH button on the results display in such circumstances instead of the BACK button.

The Free Stuff
At our website this month you will find a feature on Celebrating America. Money: what it is; how U.S. currency is made; and how to budget will certainly help you update your collection. The interviews with Elizabeth Levy and Janet Stevens prepared by Candice Ransom include reviews of some of their books. To view these items, go to www.childrenslit.com
