CLCD NEWSLETTERVolume 2, Issue 6June 2003

Like most of you, we have been following the news and the ALA web site for information on the annual conference. We thought you would like to know that The Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) will be at ALA in Toronto at Booth 3000B. We find this to be a good opportunity to meet with you. For those of you who already subscribe, it is a way for us to hear how you are using the database. We love to hear your comments and suggestions for making it an even better tool than it already is. If you are not currently subscribing, we would love to give you a demonstration that highlights the features of the CLCD and the many ways in which our subscribers, from publishing houses to public libraries, and media centers to universities, have incorporated it into their daily routines. When you stop, be sure to enter your name in our drawing for Baby's First Book Bag. We are also participating in the ALA Silent Auction and have provided a Tot's Backpack with $75.00 worth of goodies.

If you can't see us at ALA in Toronto, we will also be at The Fun of Reading International Forum on Canadian Children's Literature, June 26-29th in Ottawa at the Ottawa Congress Center -- Booth 218.

Search Tip of the Month
One question that we frequently are asked is whether you can search more than one age at a time. When you select an age using the pull down menu, it is always going to search within a range. For example, if you select age 8 it will pull up all books that have that age in the range (4 to 8, 6 to 8, 8 to 10). If you want to be more specific about the age range you can type Ages 8 to 10 in the search box, and it will pull up books that reviewers have noted are for that group, but a word of caution here you may miss some very good books. We are working on a redesign of that feature so that it is more obvious that you are getting an age range when you select an age.

Please note that sometimes an author or illustrator link will not work. We check them on a regular basis, but just recently, two major sites have reorganized, so we know that 150 links to particular author illustrator pages will no longer work. They will be corrected in next month's update. It is also a help to us if you can notify webmaster@childrenslit.com anytime you encounter a broken link.

At Our Website
Celebrate a couple of June holidays this month. We have a selection of books relating to the American flag to celebrate Flag Day on June 14th . There are also reviews of books celebrating Father's Day on June 15th. If you need one or two of these new books quickly, just use the Children's Literature/Barnes & Noble Bookstore for your purchase. There is a scholarly feature about Robert Frost by Lesley Francis who is his granddaughter, a nice twist to celebrate the start of a hot summer. Our updates for two regular features--African Americans features famous people, and Space, which digresses into flights of fancy with a look at some new science fiction books. Bill Cosby has a new book out and there is a feature supplied by the publisher and of course June is the month when the new Harry Potter Book will hit the bookstores and the hands of scads of young readers. This month's other featured authors are Holly Black and Tony DeTerlizzi author and illustrator of the (Spiderwick Chronicles); William Steig in his nineties and still going strong as the author supplied piece notes and we have an update of our previous feature about nonfiction author Michael Cooper and his latest books.
