CLCD NEWSLETTERVolume 2, Issue 11November 2003

November. How did we get here so fast? It seems as if summer just ended. Yet, the days are growing colder and darker. Outdoor grilling has been replaced with soups and stews. The calendar calls for civic duty, remembrance and celebration in election day, Veterans' Day, National Children's Book Week and Thanksgiving. The Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) can help you create displays and booklists and still leave time to booktalk your favorite titles during National Children's Book Week, November 17 to 23.

Are you looking for some less obvious ideas for displays? A search for nature crafts, which are quite popular this time of year, yields 291 hits. Why not create a display of soups and stews? Remember to search both fiction and nonfiction and you will find some dandy titles to spice up this display. The CLCD has a powerful search engine to help you find items out of the ordinary. Combine terms such as family celebrations food and you will be amazed at what interesting titles will appear. Please let us know what unusual combinations you have tried that have yielded a bountiful harvest of books for you. We would be happy to pass them along to all our subscribers.

Search Tip of the Month
Just a reminder that the information in the search box can be anything you know about an item or what you may be looking for as it relates to a title. For example, if you are looking for a large print edition of Peter Pan. Try keying Peter Pan large type. You will get two hits for the large type editions. When the search results list is displayed it will show the name of the publisher and that will also help identify, large type editions, sound recordings and the like.

This year we made arrangements with Barnes & Noble to create the CLCD Bookstore that provides our subscribers with an extra 5% discount over and above whatever price Barnes & Noble is listing for items that they are selling. This discount applies to anyone who clicks on the B&N Bookstore symbol from the CLCD database. It is not limited to children's books--the discount applies to any item that Barnes & Noble is selling.

For organizations that currently do spot buying, the savings can mount up, and your subscription can probably pay for itself. For students at colleges and universities, this program is also a great way to save some money and pass along a nice benefit. Public library patrons who are purchasing through CLCD also benefit from the program.

If you haven't already advised your library personnel, faculty, students or patrons, please let them know that the 5% savings is available on all their purchases if they use the CLCD/Barnes & Noble bookstore.
