Spreading the News

The glorious days of spring beckon us to experience the annual re-awakening of flora and fauna. But at CLCD we haven't been lying dormant all winter. We welcome CM: Canadian Review of Materials to the CLCD. CM reviews children's and young adults' books, video and audio recordings, and CD-ROMs produced in Canada or that are published elsewhere but have a special significance to Canada. In order to provide you with additional information on audio recordings, we now include the Recorded Books descriptions. Also, we are pleased to announce that the CLCD now contains 182,727 British MARC records for children's materials.

Mother's Day is fast approaching. Come take a look at the new books celebrating mothers. We have updated our themed review sections on Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day. If you are making small book purchases, use the convenient CLCD Company bookstore. Remember, the discount applies to anyone using the database.

Our new author features include Joyce Carol Oates, author of Big Mouth & Ugly Girl and the highly acclaimed Pete Hautman, whose most recent book, Sweetblood, puts an unusual spin on vampires and diabetes.

Be sure to read our interview with Angela Johnson. She was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship this year, which is given to a highly select group "who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction."

Remember to check our Home Page for the latest links to authors and illustrators as well as special events celebrating children's literature. We update these throughout the month.

In response to requests we have modified the Age qualify on the search screen. You will be able to use pull down menus to search for age ranges. It should be fairly obvious when you look at the screen. Please note that if you put in a qualifier such as Ages 8 to 13 it will get all books that have those ages in the range according to what the reviews have stated so it could include books identified as appropriate for ages 4 to 8 as well as 8 to 12 or 8 up.

Also we have added back all of the languages so that you don't have to type them in the search box. The major languages for children's books appear first followed by the others in alpha order. So if you need to know if a dictionary was produced in Urdu, just click on Urdu in the language list and dictionaries as genre and then search-you will get 13 hits.
