Summertime means music in the park, the city bandstand and large outdoor concert venues. Listening to the musicians warm up creates a great feeling of anticipation. The most exciting part, however, is when they actually start to play and all the sounds join harmoniously together. The Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) is like a concert. We’ve taken care of the preparation so you don’t have to wait for the “warm up.” Whether you are in the mood for classical (otherwise known as classic children’s books), country (genre books for children and young adults), patriotic (nonfiction) or contemporary (the most recent publications), you will be as pleased as can be with the orchestration, flow, and harmony of the CLCD.

We have recently added reviews from Library Media Connections and have thousands of new reviews scheduled for the September update.

When searching for an author with a name that sometimes appears in an abbreviated form, such as Chris instead of Christopher or Tony instead of Anthony, do try searching both versions, especially if you have selected to limit your search to the author/illustrator fields. We use the cataloging records provided by the Library of Congress and others organizations that prepare them for materials the Library of Congress does not catalog or may not have cataloged yet. Therefore, the name authority file may not always be consulted or consistent.

The Summer Olympics have kicked off in Greece, and we have pulled together books that tell the story of the Olympics and some of the events. Sue Macy, one of our featured authors, has captured in her prose and selection of photographs in her latest book, Swifter, Higher, Stronger, the essence of these Olympic Games. If Greece is too hot, how about a quick visit to Alaska. Cool off with our selection of books about our 49th state. In the next few months we will be featuring interviews with authors and illustrators who make this beautiful but chilly state their home.

To lighten up your summer days, we visited with Doreen Cronin. Her book titles are enough to make one laugh: Duck for President, Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type and Diary of a Worm and so we thought you would like to know a little more about this creative and amusing author. In conjunction with Doreen’s books, summer may be an ideal time to spend a few days with the family on a working farm. A selection of books about farm life are available for your review.

Pam Turner has writer her first book about a very famous dog in Japan—Hachiko. She heard the story while living in Japan and wanted to share it with a new audience. Kids and adults will find this story heartwarming and enjoyable. In addition to an interview with Pam, we plan to have an interview with the illustrator, Jan Nascimbene, posted next month.
