Spreading the News

There is a new treat beginning this month in the Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD). We are introducing Teaching Tools: lesson plans and teaching guides which will come from a variety of sources: publishers, authors, children's literature specialists, and teachers. A small batch will be added to the database in October, and we are anticipating adding hundreds over the next several months. When they have been added you will see the section called “Teaching Tools” on the full display page along with the book reviews, author and illustrator web site information, awards, honors and prizes, reading lists and reading measurement programs, MARC records, subject headings, and book jacket images. If you would like a sneak peek, you can find two examples: The Polar Express guide, written by Chris Van Allsburg, and a guide to the Hector Fuller series by Elizabeth Shreeve.

One of the more valuable techniques for limited a search is to select a date range for the publication date. This is particularly helpful if you are looking to purchase books since they seem to go out of print faster than you can blink an eye. By specifying books published within the last couple of years you have a better chance that they will still be available for sale. You can check pricing and availability for your choices by clicking on the Barnes & Noble button when you are looking at a particular book There is no need to execute another search just a simple click takes you to the item.

Our selection of Halloween books can help you determine which new titles to add to your collection. Whether you are searching for spooky or humorous, you will find the titles that will be perfect for your readers.

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue….and the world hasn't been the same since. Discover for yourself new titles on Columbus Day to perk up your display area.

Deborah Hopkinson brings to life late Nineteenth Century America in her novels. Learn more about the author of such engaging books as Shutting Out the Sky: life in the tenements of New York 1880 - 1915, Girl Wonder: a baseball story in nine innings, and the trilogy of The Klondike Kid in our section of Featured Authors and Illustrators.

Elizabeth Shreeve loves the outdoors so it is no wonder that her series for readers transitioning from beginning readers to chapter books has as its hero, Hector Fuller, a wumblebug. Curious to know more? It's in our interview with Elizabeth.

David Wiesner can also be found in our Featured Authors and Illustrators section this month. Just in time for Halloween he has published Gonna Roll the Bones, a story of a man who sells his soul to the devil.

Speaking of Authors and Illustrators, we want you to know that we have added 50 more authors and illustrators to our list of “ Meet Authors and Illustrators.” To access the list, click on the blue “Features” under the logo on our home page.
