Spreading the News

Those pesky back-to-school advertisements are all around us, forcing us to count down the days. Public librarians, media specialists, college professors, and publishers are gearing up for another school year. With the Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD), you can easily identify new titles that can help students grasp information through a variety of learning styles. Invite teachers to a beginning-of-the-year breakfast. Offer them fruit, bagels, donut holes, and homemade sour cream coffee cake (email me and I'll send you my recipe). While they are happily munching, introduce the new books. Talk about where and how they fit the curriculum. With the CLCD you can easily make a hand-out for them. And don't forget: CLCD now has links to teaching guides. Show the teachers the full display page for the book in the CLCD. They will want to be aware of all the information available to them.

The information in the search box can be anything you know about an item or what you may be looking for as it relates to a title. For example, if you are looking for an audio edition of any of the books in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy just key Pullman and audio. You will get results for all of the audio versions. When the search results list is displayed it will show the name of the publisher who produced the recording.

With plenty of sunny weather left, your book displays may be looking a bit drab. You can discover new titles to brighten up the collection in our Features section at www.childrenslit.com When children hit the summer doldrums, you will be ready with a display of titles featuring arts, crafts (such as Cool Beaded Jewelry by Pam Scheunemann for young teens) and cooking from our updated It's Time for Summer Fun. Because Dinosaurs are a perennial "hot topic" we have updated this section to keep you abreast of the newest information. We have added a brand new section about Fishing which includes the humorous picture book, Piggy and Dad go Fishing by David Martin, advice on equipment and excitement for the sport from expert fly-fisherman James Prosek in A Good Day's Fishing, and an engrossing adventure tale in Rodman Philbrick's The Young Man and the Sea.

As for our featured authors this month, Gregory Maguire, creator of the warm and wonderful character of Miss Earth, the teacher in his rural Vermont elementary school series that began with Seven Spiders Spinning shares some of his thoughts about writing for children. Laurent de Brunhoff is celebrating his birthday this month and he has a new book, Babar's World Tour. Bill Zimmerman is very concerned with the trials and tribulations that adolescent boys face. He has interviewed several hundred and written a book that should have a lot of appeal--100 Things Guys Need To Know.

We have also updated the review books in several other author features-Pamela Duncan Edwards and Henry Cole, Denise Fleming and Mem Fox.

Our monthly newsletter is now available to everyone within an organization, not just the primary contact. A new feature at www.childrenslit.com will provide you with a form allowing you to sign up for just the electronic newsletter.
