June: the traditional month for weddings. Brides and grooms hope for perfect weather and have planned every last detail. What would a wedding be without some family stories? One of the favorites, of course, is how the bride and groom met. There always seems to be a friend or relative who claims to be the match-maker. "A match made in heaven," someone will proclaim on the wedding day. It really makes me think….that librarians, too, are match-makers. Aren't we always trying to bring the reader and that special book together? When we do, and we hear those incredible words, "That was the best book I've ever read!" don't we feel as though we have succeeded in creating a very special bond? Our subscribers have discovered the fun of match-making. They use the CLCD to discover new titles and also to help them recall the full titles of books they are sure will be special to young readers. So what are you waiting for? Stop "fiddlin'" around, subscribe to the CLCD and you, too, can be a successful match-maker.

If you are in New Orleans at ALA, please stop by Booth 3744 to say hello. We look forward to meeting you. Also, at the 2006 LEXILE NATIONAL READING CONFERENCE: Developing Tomorrow's Readers…Today. June 19-21, Sheraton Atlanta Hotel, Atlanta, GA, Sheilah Egan, Mid-Atlantic Rep, for CLCD will present "Using CLCD to Search for Lexile Ranges. (TUESDAY, JUNE 20 Session: 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.)

Question: Sometimes when I do a search I get a message that says that no records were found, but I know that's not true. What could I be doing wrong?
Answer: What's probably happening is that you did not start out with a cleared search screen. It's very easy to do a search, look at the results, and then use the back button to do another search. However, if you selected one specific genre or some other qualifier on the prior search, your new search may still include that qualifier. To avoid this type of problem, we recommend you make it a point to use the NEW SEARCH button on the results display in such circumstances instead of the BACK button.

Question: I want to search for unrelated books by ISBN, how can I do that.
Answer: In the search field type the ISBN number(s) without the dashes and leave one space between each string of numbers. Click search and it will retrieve the records that meet your criteria. We recommend that you limit the list to 10 at a time to save frustration if you have made a keying error.

Features

There are many traits that make our fathers special: they impart wisdom, they make us laugh, and they encourage us to become all we can be. Our Father's Day book selection highlights these and other virtues. Rivers are an important part of American history, our economy and our food supply. Our selections in this feature can help you raise the awareness of this vital natural resource. We encourage you to celebrate National Rivers Month. Click,Clack,Moo: Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin isn't the only book to put on display for National Diary Month. This feature will give you fiction and nonfiction books and links to websites.

Now more than ever it is important to share with young people the significance of the American flag. Check out our themed reviews for Flag Day.

Author Features

What's for dinner? After reading about Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson, authors of Chew On This: The Unhappy Truth About Fast Food, you just might decide on a new food plan.

Jack Gantos' publications can take a reader from "cradle to grave" - from picture books and middle-grade fiction to novels for young adults and adults. Another exciting writer who appeals to boys is Markus Zusak who we are also featuring this month. And lest the girls feel they are being ignored, we have an update of our feature about Cheryl Harness, the author of Remember the Ladies: 100 Great American Women.

Russell Freedman was selected to give the Arbuthnot lecture this year and we have a brief summary of his talk-- The Past Isn't Past: How History Speaks, and What it Says to the Next Generation-and a selection of reviews from his body of work.

Quote of the Month

"I also appreciated that many of the books featured reviews from multiple sources. Having access to more than one review gave me a broader understanding of each book's content and quality…The database allowed me to do my work thoroughly and efficiently. I can't imagine a better way to search for engaging books for the kids we serve."
