Spreading the News

A few years ago when I was visiting San Antonio, Texas I arose early to take a stroll along the River Walk. It was a beautiful morning: bright blue sky and lush and pretty trees lining the trail. Suddenly, a hummingbird appeared and had breakfast in a flowering tree right next to me. I stood still for quite a while just enjoying this special event. Surprises can be found on all sorts of trails, whether it be a forest, a park or just along the border of the building next door. At the Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) we like to consider the links to curriculum tools, information about authors & illustrators, awards and prizes, etc., as special trails that open up new worlds to you, the readers you serve, and the students you teach. We want these links to be full of wonderful surprises. As with all trails, the links need periodic attention. We have started manually checking the links from the CLCD - removing the dead wood, so to speak - to ensure that you can connect to the information for which you are searching. As you can imagine, it is a long process and will continue well into the fall. We have been busy increasing the links to curriculum tools as well. In fact, we have doubled them in the last month.

We just thought you would like to know….we take our reputation seriously: reliable, efficient, comprehensive and cost-effective - that's CLCD.

Sort Function
JavaScripts provide CLCD with the ability to sort the records in the results set and to select and save specific records found by the search. A pop-up window will allow you to resequence the records in the results set. If you accept the default, it will resequence the records in descending order based on publication date. You can also sort alphabetically by title, author, language, Dewey, or LC classification and in either ascending or descending order. NOTE: You must be using a version 4 browser with JavaScript support enabled for the sort function to be available on the Search results page.

Monthly Features

We are celebrating the 300th anniversary of Ben Franklin's birth. Select from the titles in this list for a great display in your library or classroom. Speaking of inventors, and in hopes of encouraging young people, we have added a new web page--Inventors and Inventions with a link to the Ben Franklin feature.

It's that time of year again. Be sure to check out our Back to School update, and get ahead of the game with our updated Baseball feature; with October comes the Baseball World Series.

Author Features

This month we have updated our feature about Marissa Moss, know for her Amelia books among others. We have added a new feature relating to Robert L. Ripley, adventurer, reporter, cartoonist and creator of Believe It or Not! Take some time to reacquaint yourself with Doreen Rappaport, and don't miss the link to her fabulous web site.

It is hard to believe that Biscuit is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Author Alyssa Satin Capucilli recounts that as "a young reader, I had an unbridled passion for puppies. I scoured each shelf of the library and grabbed up every dog-related book I could get my paws on." This puppy's popularity continues to grow among young children, and the compilation of reviews really demonstrates that.

Kate Banks responds to questions about her book, Friends of the Heart, a Bank Street College of Education Best Children's Book of the Year 2005.

Quote of the Month

"I wore two hats at my college: I was the Curriculum Librarian and I taught Literature for Children. I used CLCD in both roles with the students in the School of Education. The ease with which they could retrieve titles by searching subjects, and then find impartial reviews of those titles, makes them eager users. The ability to be very specific in their searches gave these future teachers confidence in their ability to locate books to meet their needs. Their work in the college classroom was very much enhanced by the database, and I know their teaching will reflect this experience."
