Search Tip of the Month It's that time of year again. Yes, it is time to address an issue that needs amazing, incredible and innovative brainstorming. You think I am going to talk about preparing for Back to School Night which is your big chance to impress upon parents the important and intertwining roles of parent, child and teacher. Well, I suppose that could be the topic at hand. However, I have something that creeps into our thoughts more often. It is time to figure out what to do with the great zucchini harvest. If you are tired of fried zucchini, zucchini bread and that late summer harvest combination of zucchini, tomatoes and onions, then why not create a library display with the overabundant vegetable? If you do a search on "zucchini" in the Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) you will get 86 results; certainly enough to create a lively and diverse display of novels, cookbooks and picture books. Why, it could even be on display for Back to School Night! And while there is a great proliferation of zucchini, there is only one CLCD. It is comprehensive but never overwhelming. |

In response to an inquiry, we have modified the search for exact phrase. Previously, if it did not find a match it would bring up results that had any of the words, now if there is not an exact match it will bring up results only if all of the words appear. Most searchers find this approach more helpful than just getting a null set of results. In addition, later this month we will be indexing on another field in the MARC record which gives the author name in normal order so using exact phrase plus selecting author/illustrator should get you more precise results. Currently the MARC field we index on has the author name in cataloging format--last name, first name. Thus you will be able to get it either way when searching and using exact phrase. |
