Search Tip of the Month This month is brought to you by the letter “M:” May, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and Money Management. The first three of those need no explanation so we can move right to the fourth. Many of you are near the end of your school year or fiscal year, and you are looking at what is left in your budget. Some of you might even discover that your school has some extra funds that can be made available for a special purchase. No, I am not crazy. This does happen! Here at the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) we have heard that some of you were waiting to see if you had enough funds to subscribe. This is just a little reminder to say that now is the time to do so. Your new subscription can begin immediately so you can use it to create your summer reading lists, or you can delay the start until August or September. A subscription to CLCD is an excellent way to get your year-end dollars working for you. Just ask your CLCD- subscribing colleagues about all the benefits that they, their students, teachers and other faculty have been reaping since last fall. Don’t lose another year. Subscribe now at www.childrenslit.com or call 1-800-469-2070 for more information.

The CLCD database is adding a new feature—the ability to review first chapters and in some cases selected sections and table of contents for books. We will be starting with a few but hope to increase the number fairly quickly. This new information should provide additional assistance in determining which titles you would like to add to your collection. |

Monthly Features
Mother’s Day is May 13th. To help you with programs and displays we include a wide range of titles for all ages, and stories that are silly, sentimental, and somewhere in-between. Memorial Day is more than a three-day weekend. From its “Decoration Day” origins to the present day, it is a way to honor those soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Please use our feature to acquaint your students and patrons with the true meaning of this holiday. Flying Kites is a great springtime family activity, and can be an introduction to a unit about electricity as well. With this in mind we have updated this feature. Cinco de Mayo will soon be here. Be ready with a special book or a display from our list of suggested titles.
Author Features
Eric Kimmel, the premier folklorist and author of Herschel and the Hanukkah Goblins and Cactus Soup, talks about the literary, childhood and family influences that helped him become a writer. Dianna Hutts Aston and Sylvia Long, author and illustrator respectively, of the award-winning beautiful book, An Egg Is Quiet, discuss this and their newest collaboration, A Seed Is Sleepy, in a very thoughtful conversation. Find out what they have to say about presenting science to children and working together. The I Can Read!™ series is celebrating 50 years of wonderful books that have shown generations of readers that books can be fun and informative. Many of our favorite book characters can be found within the pages of this series: Amelia Bedelia, Frog and Toad, and Little Bear, to name a few. Read more about the history of the series and a salute to these books, both old and new, which get children reading. |
