CLCD BROADENS ITS INTERNATIONAL SCOPE

Bethesda MD - March 7, 2003 - The Children's Literature Comprehensive Database is pleased to announce the addition of three high quality review media, bringing the total number of database participants to 24. Two international and one American source have recently been added. They are Inis, the quarterly magazine of Children's Books Ireland, Lollipops: What's On for Kids, an online magazine from South Australia, and reviews from BookHive, the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County web site.

"We have been including Canadian children's book reviews through Resource Links for some time and we thought it was time to extend to other countries in the English-speaking world. Our goal is to offer our subscribers broad perspectives on children's books through a range of reviews," says Marilyn Courtot, President of the CLCD Company, LLC. "Many books originally published in countries such as Australia and Ireland are now available in the United States. Conversely, the U.S. titles are often made available there as well. In our search to provide a broad perspective on a book through multiple reviews, these sources add an important dimension. Anyone interested in the international children's publishing scene will greatly appreciate the easy access to these reviews."

Inis contains reviews and articles on Irish and international children's books. Children's Books Ireland, formed in 1996 through the merger of the Children's Literature Association of Ireland and the Irish Children's Book Trust, is the national children's book organization of Ireland. Its aim is to promote quality children's books and reading. Children's Books Ireland also runs the prestigious Bisto Book Awards, Ireland's only annual children's book awards. Their website can be accessed at www.childrensbooksireland.com.

Lollipops what's on for kids, Adelaide, Australia's first family entertainment magazine has been available to South Australian readers since 1993. In 2001 it replaced its print version with an Online version. It publishes reviews of fiction and nonfiction as well as audio, multimedia, cinema and video reviews. Its book reviews are written by adults as well as older children and teens. "This extends our coverage of a title. Subscribers to the database can read what a child thinks of the book and add that information to what professional reviewers have to say," states Courtot. Their Web address is www.lollipopsmagazine.com.

In 1999 The Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County (Charlotte, NC) designed a web site for children, their parents, teachers and others interested in children's literature. Called BookHive, it provides reader's advisory service and contains hundreds of recommended book reviews in a variety of reading levels and interest areas. There are "parental notes" attached to some reviews that provide additional information about the book. The reviews found in Bookhive are written by the staff of the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County. To view their web site go to www.bookhive.org.
