CLCD Receives an "A" On Its Report Card

October 2009

CLCD, which aggregates reviews from 38 respected review sources, has been reviewed in the October 2009 issue of School Library Journal. Professor Shonda Brisco of Oklahoma State University, Stillwater wrote the article entitled "The Best in Kids' Books at Your Fingertips" in which she discussed The Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) as an important tool for librarians working with children's and Young Adult literature. The article was highly organized and addressed the appropriate audience for CLCD: teachers and librarians as well as school students and college students; the cost: $295.00 per basic subscription with rates for schools, academics, and public libraries available upon request; an overview of the database; "the look & feel" of using CLCD; "how it works;" and special sections for students and teachers; as well as "teachers and librarians."

Professor Brisco has written numerous articles for a variety of journals about librarianship. She currently writes a "Digital Resources" column for School Library Journal and also writes a "Technology" column for Library Sparks. She is an active member of the Texas Library Association, the American Library Association, and the Texas Computer Educators' Association. Having worked in all of the arenas of library service: school, public and academic, she is well qualified to evaluate tools for librarians, especially electronic resources.

The final section, "Report Card," included the following:

"This database was tested with pre-service teachers and librarians who wanted to see specific search capabilities...both groups agreed that the search results offered a lengthy list of content that might not be found in other databases. The ability to quickly locate reviews from various professional journals, as well as having the reading and interest levels of books both searchable and accessible to the school's online catalog were a big plus...for providing users with a great deal of information both before and after we actually accessed the database, CLCD deserves a solid A. "

This recommendation should encourage all who are interested in any facet of children's and Young Adult literature to take a free trial of the database found at: www.childrenslit.com.
